About Us

Mission

Congo Activists is a grassroots activist group in the USA raising awareness about the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), actively working for justice and peace in DRC, and raising funds to support organizations doing powerful peace work in the DRC.

History of Congo Activists

We started as a small "Run for Congo Women" team (only 2 people!).  We ran in the Burns Park Run in Ann Arbor in May of 2010.  With  a lot of promotion we expanded the team to about 20 runners and walkers.  We ran as the team "Run for Congo Women - Ann Arbor" in the Big House Big Heart Run on October 3, 2010.  Our team raised $2000 for Women for Women International's Congo Program.

Since then we evolved into "Congo Activists of Michigan" and worked out of Ann Arbor, Michigan from 2010 - 2014.  In 2015 we evolved into "Congo Activists" and were based in Los Angeles, California.  Now in 2018, we are based in Denver, Colorado.  We have been collaborating with other groups, and producing a wide range of events.
  • Our annual Hike for Congo event is a fundraiser for our youth partners in DRC.
  • We've held screenings of the films "Lumo" and "Crisis in the Congo: Uncovering the Truth" during Congo Week
  • We've held candlelight vigils on the U of Michigan Diag on Human Rights Day
  • We brought Congolese Activist Kambale Musavuli to speak at the University of Michigan campus
  • **See Events page for more past events**

We are always open for anyone to join our group.  We are always open to new ideas and suggestions for local action.

Action Plan

Below are the 4 key strategic ways we are taking action.

SUPPORT ACTIVISTS IN CONGO:
  • Our Run for Congo Women team was a fundraiser for Women for Women International's Congo program.
  • Hike for Congo and Congo Week events are fundraisers for Friends of the Congo's Congo Connect Youth Project.
  • We have donated some used electronics to the Friends of the Congo Youth Project, and are always collecting more.

VOICES heard IN POLITICS:
  • Sent thousands of postcards to Sec. John Kerry http://congojustice.org/postcard/
  • We have sent 10,000 thousand postcards to Sec. Clinton, in collaboration with the Dear Hillary Campaign
  • We have circulated online petitions to Obama + Sec. Clinton.
  • Contacted our government reps via Twitter.
  • We write letters to the President, Senators, Congress Reps, etc.

EDUCATE OTHERS:
  • Teach-ins
  • Film screenings
  • Bookclubs
  • Guest speakers
  • Collaborating with other groups on similar projects.
See our Events page for all upcoming events.

EXPOSE CORPORATE INVOLVEMENT/ETHICS:

We are concerned about corporations (especially US corporations) doing business in the war zone, directly, or indirectly, funding the violence.
We are not sure what action to take on this yet, we are brainstorming and open to suggestions.
